@ Hayti Heritage Center 804 Old Fayetteville St Durham, NC 27701
This is a poetry/spoken word event you don't want to miss. Each year we host a special slam that is done gauntlet style, meaning survival is key. Each round has a unique theme and task for the poets. The poet who completes all the tasks with the best score is crowned the winner. Come see creativity put to the ultimate test.
The rounds: *Only 10 poets allowed to compete max
Round 1 - Regular Round. 10 poets will spit a 3 min poem. If you go over 3 min then you are disqualified. There is no grace period. 8 poets will advance.
Round 2 - Haiku Cage Match Battle Royal Round. In wrestling, when there is a battle royal all the wrestlers enter the ring and the last one standing wins. In this round, each poet will spit 3 haiku and be scored on their overall haiku skill. The top 3 scoring poets are safe. The top scoring poet gets to choose the another person to advance from the remaining 5 poets. 4 poets advance.
Round 3 - Surprise Round. I'll tell you what you have to do when you get there. 2 poets advance.
Round 4 - Madlib Cover Poem Round. The judges will be given a well known poem with words missing. Like a Madlib, they will fill in words of their choosing. Each poet will be given this poem to read and will be scored on their reading.
